4.2 Vocabutoon/Vocabutoons

When and where I found it. I found this word in our course text, Word Wise and Content Rich, (2008).
What it means. It is best described as “an updated version of vocabulary cards” using cartoon illustrations to support students’ ability to learn new vocabulary (Fisher & Frey, 2008, p. 109).
Level of familiarity. I am familiar with and have used this concept of using illustrations to aid in vocabulary learning, but I have not focused instruction on cartoon illustrations. This specific term is new to me.
Do I want to know this word well and why? Yes, I do want to know this word well so that I can differentiate vocabulary development and support students’ ability to have fun learning new words.
Do I think others should know this word well....if so, who and why? Absolutely, others should know the word well. Educators and students should know this word so that students have another strategy to increase and consolidate their word knowledge. Fisher & Frey (2008) acknowledge that this strategy requires students to use a different part of their brain, another way to increase metacognition. Vocabutoons can also instill a  collaborative, interactive learning environment.
